Meals on Wheels

A California nonprofit corporation.  Endorsed by the Pasadena Medical Society and the Pasadena Department of Public Health.

Meals on Wheels
Pasadena Meals on Wheels is a non-profit community service staffed by volunteers.  We are dedicated to helping the disabled, aged, or ill by supplying them with delicious wholesome meals at a nominal cost.  Our service assures friendly interest and most importantly helps our clients to remain self-sufficient in their own home.

A Bit of History
Meals on Wheels originated in England during World War II when the Women’s Volunteer Services were organized to help Civil Defense.  The first successful program in the United States began in Philadelphia in 1954 and has spread throughout other major cities.

Pasadena Meals on Wheels was started in May of 1964 and has the distinction of being the first chapter west of the Mississippi.  From an initial seven clients, it has expanded to serving approximately 100 clients today.

How We Operate
Preparation of all food delivered by Meals on Wheels is centered in a kitchen at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church.  This facility is provided by the Church to our organization at a nominal cost as a community service.

A volunteer Board of Trustees handles business aspects.  The paid staff consists of a cook and a coordinator.  Volunteers, who make the wheels turn, package and deliver meals five days a week, Monday through Friday with holidays excepted.  Deliveries are made mid-day and consist of a hot dinner and a sack meal for evenings.

The charge for meals is nominal. Private contributions of individuals and corporations assist in subsidizing the cost since there is no governmental financial assistance.

Eligibility is open to anyone without regard to race, age, sex, or disability.  Initial minimum service is for 10 days payable in advance. To make arrangements call: 626-449-6815 between 9 am and 1 pm, Monday through Friday.
