Financial Help for Taking Care of Grandchildren
Help is available if you are caring for a grandchild or other young relative. CalWORKs benefits are available for yourself and the child if you meet certain eligibility requirements. And if you are seeking benefits for the child only, your employment status will have no bearing on the child's eligibility. Contact the Social Services Office (626) 796-0306. For grandparents seeking information, click here.

Foot Health Tips
Properly fitted shoes are essential. An astonishing number of people wear shoes that fit poorly, and cause serious foot problems. A tie shoe with a firm sole and soft upper is best for daily activities. Shop for shoes in the afternoon to get the best fit, as feet tend to swell during the day. Inspect your feet every day or have someone do this for you. If you notice any redness, swelling, cracks in the skin, or sores, consult your podiatrist. Have your feet examined by a podiatrist at least twice a year. For more information about foot health care, contact The American Podiatric Medical Association at (800) 366-8227 or visit click here.

Give a Pet
Shelter pets make great companions.  Consider giving a gift certificate from the Humane Society for a pet adoption. You can also include a leash, collar or new style tag. The Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA provide animal care and control for Glendale, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Arcadia, Flintridge, La Canada, San Marino and Sierra Madre. Animals are a great source of comfort and companionship for many seniors who would otherwise feel alone. The Human Society returns lost pets to owners and helps with maintaining their health. For more information, call (626) 792-7151 or click here.

Is It The Cold or The Flu?
The flu and the common cold are caused by different viruses.  Because these two types of illness have similar symptoms, it can be hard to tell the difference between them.  In general, the flu virus is worse than the common cold and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness and dry cough are more common and intense.  Colds tend to have milder symptoms such as a runny and stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospital stays.  Every year, more than 2 million people are hospitalized with flu complications and 36,000 die of the flu. If you’re at-risk (65 and older or with a chronic illness), practice good health habits and visit your doctor.

Living with Bipolar
Many of us have experienced the following symptoms: restlessness, high level of energy, speaking fast and loud, incoherent thinking, easily diverted motivation, increased anxiety and nervousness.  But those suffering from Bipolar Disorder experience these symptoms with greater intensity and for prolonged periods of time. Some helpful solutions to consider: talk to a doctor to learn about your illness, get plenty of sleep, avoid caffeine and other stimulants, and most importantly take your medications every day at the same time, no matter how you feel. For more information, visit the Bipolar Help Center website at click here.

Stoke Survivors with Aphasia
Answering a telephone call from a friend, ordering dinner at a favorite restaurant, or writing a check at the grocery store are daily activities that most can easily accomplish. However, ask anyone with aphasia, and they'll tell you differently. Aphasia is an impairment of the ability to use or comprehend words, usually acquired as a result of a stroke or other brain injury.  It can affect a person's ability to find the right words to say, use correct grammar, understand conversations, read and write. The Reseda California Stroke Activity Group (SAG) facilitates support groups and specializes in aphasias rehabilitation. If you or a loved one would like more information on Stoke Survivors with Aphasia, please call (818) 968-2337.  Click here to visit the National Aphasia Association.
