Suzanne Barber
Appointed October 2006
Suzanne recently retired from a career in
finance with JPL and the private industry. She has lived in the
Pasadena area since 1959. Her hobbies include painting, dancing,
traveling, music and art.
Gloria Barsic
Appointed September 2006
Gloria holds a BA in Community Arts from Etiera
Arts College of Havana Cuba. Since living in the States, Gloria has
taught at ESL courses and tutored at Pasadena, Arcadia and Alhambra
schools.
Joyce
Brownfield
Appointed March 2006
A long time
resident of Pasadena (homeowner since 1978), Ms. Brownfield was born
in Illinois and moved to Florida in her teens, where she attended
the Hilton Leech School of Art. On migrating to California she held
various positions prior to her employ by ARCO (corp. headquarters in
Los Angeles) from 1977 to 2001. There she was associate editor in
Political Affairs, publishing newsletters and alerts on issues
critical to the company for employees, retirees and shareholders
(circulation: 94,000). She also was involved in organizing political
forums for employee and retirees at company facilities around the
country, featuring officeholders, candidates for office and issues
spokesmen.
Cordella
Ennis
Appointed February 2006
Cordella
Ennis is a retired Counselor at Cal State L.A. and a retired
Director of the Foothill Branch of Foothill Valley of Pasadena Y.M.C.A. She received her B.A. from Kansas University and a degree
in Social Psychology from Cal State L.A. She has been involved in
several community organizations throughout the years. She has been
married to her architect husband for 60 years and they have lived in
Pasadena for 56 years.
Mildred Hawkins
Appointed February 2006
Mildred
Hawkins, a resident in the Pasadena area since 1974, was
born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After high school, she
enrolled in Los Angeles City College and majored in
Secretarial Science. Hawkins began a career in word
processing, which spanned the next 35 years. Her tenure as a
technical publications supervisor for a major engineering
company ended after 12 years. In 1980, Hawkins jointed First
AME Church in Pasadena and has been an active member.
Hawkins political and community associations include serving
as a member of the 1997 Pasadena Mayoral Celebration
Committee, working as a volunteer in many Pasadena-based
organizations such as Villa Esperanza, Pasadena Senior
Center, and servicing as President of the Pilgrim Tower East
Resident Association. Hawkins has also served as a
commissioner on the Senior Commission; Parks and Recreations
Commission and now serving as a commissioner on the Human
Services and Recreation Commission. Hawkins has three adult
daughters, five grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Daniel B. Howell
Appointed May 2006
Daniel
retired from the Natural History Museum of LA County where
he was senior museum technician in the Exhibits Department.
He now spends much of his free time as a volunteer. He is a
Long Term Care Ombudsman, Friend and Usher of the Pasadena
Playhouse and gives his time and energy to many causes - cancer, AIDS and other issues.
He is
finishing his first of 3 years in ministerial training,
focusing on senior issues.
Mira
Mataric
Appointed April 2006
Born and
educated in Serbia and other countries of Europe, Mira has traveled
extensively. She has worked in the largest Serbian library for 14
years, taught for 30 years, translated and interpreted for about 50
years. Mira has published 23 bi-lingual books and has two thousand
citations in publications including: stories, memories, critiques,
translations of the leading poets, writers of America, England,
Ireland, India, Serbia, etc. Mira has been living in the United
States since 1982, and is active in the international writers’
activities.
Marilyn
Pedington
Appointed February 2006
Born in
Toronto Canada, Marilyn attended school there and graduated in
Physical Occupational Therapy from University of Toronto. She moved
to California in the late 50’s and married. Marilyn volunteered at
County USC Pediatrics for 5 years. She also worked at Lee Hansen
Travel from ’74 to 2002. Now semi-retired, Marilyn volunteers at the
Pasadena Humane Society.
Helen Saltman
Appointed September 2006
Helen was the director of Writing Across the
Disciplines Program and co-director of the Tutoring Program in
English at Cal State University, Northridge, where she also taught
American Literature and Writing. After retiring, Helen, and her
husband Ben, moved to the San Francisco Bay area, and subsequently
settled in Pasadena to be close to their daughters. Helen is a
native of Los Angeles, and holds a Masters and PhD in English and
American Literature from UCLA. Her expertise, in addition to
teaching, has been planning and conducting workshops for faculty and
introducing them to innovative teaching techniques.
