PASADENA SENIOR CENTER FALL CLASSES WILL BE VIRTUAL
VIA ZOOM FOR MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS

Every fall the Pasadena Senior Center offers a full lineup of classes for members. Now they will be available to non-members as well. Residency in Pasadena is not required.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 30 classes for adults ages 40 and older are offered online via Zoom.

During this period of quarantine, many people are looking for new and interesting ways to discover new interests and experience new activities to increase activity levels and prevent boredom, loneliness and depression.

Online fall classes include the following:

Dance

Zumba Gold – Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 12. This low-intensity dance/fitness program features Latin and world rhythms and meets the needs of participants who want to experience exciting rhythms. Ten-week class. $55 for members and $65 for non-members. Instructor: Hector Ramirez, licensed Zumba Gold instructor.

Beginning Tap – Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Oct 13. Tap dancing is fun, low-impact and easy on the body. Learn basic steps during each class, followed by a fun tap routine with music from Broadway to Vegas and from country to Latin dance. Five-week class. $60 for members and $70 for non-members. Instructor: Pam Kay, retired Las Vegas entertainer.

Intermediate Tap – Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 13. Continue with choreographed routines accompanied by music including pop, jazz, Broadway and more. Learn new routines as well standard routines such as the Shim Sham Shimmy. Five-week class. $60 for members and $70 for non-members. Instructor: Pam Kay, retired Las Vegas entertainer.

Solo Ballroom Dancing – Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. beginning Oct. 14. Many older adults are quarantined alone and cannot learn dancing with a partner. This class teaches participants how to practice solo dancing and continue to improve their ski. Learn basic patterns of rumba, cha cha, waltz and east coast swing as well as routines and techniques for leading, following and developing timing and rhythm. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Instructor: Tony Plasil, certified ballroom dance instructor.

Solo Ballroom Line Dancing – Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. beginning Oct. 14. Ballroom line dancing is fun, easy to learn and can be enjoyed without a partner. Learn basic steps of ballroom dancing such as the foxtrot and cha cha in a line dance format, plus basic patterns and character of each dance. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Instructor: Tony Plasil, certified ballroom dance instructor.

BollyX LIT – Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m. beginning Oct. 16. This Bollywood-inspired, low-impact cardio dance/fitness program combines dynamic choreography with the hottest music from around the world and improves coordination and mind-body awareness. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Instructor: Richa Jauhari, BollyX master trainer.

Exercise/Fitness

Strength Training – Mondays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. beginning Oct. 5. Older adults who do not have access to strength-training machines and equipment can still strengthen their bodies using free weights, bands, ankle weights or anything they can find around the house that creates resistance, such as bottles of water, towels, scarves and cans of soup. Eight-week class. $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Instructor: Leslie Lollar, certified senior fitness instructor.

Beginner/Intermediate Pep Up Your Life – Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. beginning Oct. 10. Designed to improve strength, balance and flexibility, this introductory-level course will improve the way participants feel about their health and bodies while increasing muscle mass and bone density. Participants work at their own pace and within their individual comfort ranges. Ten-week class. $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Instructor: Donald Millares, group exercise instructor.

Designed to improve strength, balance and flexibility, this advanced-level course will improve the way participants feel about their health and bodies while increasing muscle mass and bone density. Participants work at their own pace and within their individual comfort ranges. Ten-week class. $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Donald Millares, group exercise instructor.

Mat Pilates – Tuesdays from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. beginning Oct. 13. This course improves strength, flexibility, balance and coordination through an effective mind/body workout. It focuses on core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. It is highly versatile for meeting participants’ needs, from reconditioning to post-rehabilitation. Eight-week class. $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Instructor: Monica Blake, professional Pilates coach.

Yoga and Presence Practice/Meditation – Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon beginning Oct. 13. This is a fun blend of yoga and meditation, movement and awareness. Ancient practices are designed to combine balance, strength, flexibility and mindfulness with a unity of mind, body and spirit. All levels of experience are welcome. Ten-week class. $65 for members and $75 for non-members. Instructor: Avry Budka, certified yoga instructor.

Yoga – Wednesdays from 9 to 10:25 a.m. beginning Oct. 14. Yoga’s influence is on the precise alignment of the body in the asanas (poses) and careful sequencing and firming of the asanas. This course is for beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Margie Rosenblum, certified yoga instructor.

Chair Aerobics – Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. beginning Oct. 14. This course offers a combination of low-impact chair aerobics and the use of weights. Participants will tone their muscles and increase flexibility. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Instructor: Donna Reese, chair aerobics instructor.

Qigong and Tai Chi – Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. beginning Oct. 15. This course combines the basic concept and theory of chi and chi movement to enhance participants’ physical and spiritual well-being and increase vitality and longevity. Learn the eight-section brocade and 25-step short form and get an introduction to the 105-step long form. With slow, fluid movements, participants can improve blood flow, reduce stress and increase strength and balance. Ten-week class. $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Instructor: Chris Tucker, Qigong and Tai Chi instructor.

Hobbies and Special Interests

Advanced Watercolors – Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Oct. 1. This course is designed for painters with experience in watercolors. Each weekly class will feature a different paint-along lesson combined with a share-and-critique session. Five-week class. $40 for members, $50 for non-members. Instructor: Barbara Medford, professional artist and art instructor.

Advanced Watercolors (additional class) – Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Oct. 1. This course is designed for painters with experience in watercolors. The Art and Joy of Sewing – Mondays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning Oct. 12. Learn how to take proper measurements, understand fabrics, work with patterns, cut garments, operate a sewing machine and more. A variety of fabrics will be available for pickup at the Pasadena Senior Center; fabric costs are included in the cost of the course. All skill levels are welcome. Ten-week class. $85 for members and $95 for non-members. Instructor: Cate Shaffer-Shelby, certified sewing instructor.

Creative Writing – Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon. Beginning Oct. 14. Self-expression can be fun and rewarding. Learn how to write poetry, biographies, memoirs, novels and more. Constructive criticism will be provided in a supportive and friendly online environment. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Mira Mataric, author and educator.

Beginner French 1 – Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. beginning Oct. 14. This course is for anyone who is completely new to the language or who took French classes so many years ago that they have become rusty at best. Learn important expressions for traveling in France, plus general grammatical structure and present tense. There also will be an emphasis on the French culture. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Teresa Cortey, chair of Glendale College’s Foreign Language Department.

Beginner French 2 – Mondays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. beginning Oct. 12. Continue to build grammatical and vocabulary skills and learn past, future and imperfect tenses. There also will be an emphasis on French culture. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Teresa Cortey, chair of Glendale College’s Foreign Language Department.

Intermediate French – Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 12. Practice more direct communication in French, continue building vocabulary and learn conditional and subjunctive forms of the language, plus French culture. Advanced French 1 – Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 14. Continue practice in communication, building vocabulary and further study of the subjunctive, plus introduction to literary tenses and more about French culture. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Teresa Cortey, chair of Glendale College’s Foreign Language Department.

Advanced French 2 – Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. beginning Oct 14. This course will include an intensive review of major grammatical concepts, increased practice in communication, plus more exploration of French literature and culture. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Teresa Cortey, chair of Glendale College’s Foreign Language Department.

Introduction to Spanish – Wednesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 14. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. Experience a fun introduction to Spanish greetings, vocabulary and grammar, including class discussion and conversation. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Instructor: Emilce Peralta, licensed Spanish instructor.

Intermediate Spanish – Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 14 Grammatical skills, vocabulary and conversation will be strengthened so participants will be able to speak, write and read Spanish. Interact with others who have a grasp of the language already. Ten-week class. $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Emilce Peralta, licensed Spanish instructor.

Making Sense of the News – Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. beginning Oct. 15. This course that will explore why some topics make it to the front page or the evening news while others do not. Learn what makes something newsworthy, who the decision makers are and more. Participants will monitor major media outlets and bring their own ideas into the discussion. Ten-week class. $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Instructor: Warren Swil, retired journalism professor, editor and reporter.

Register no later than Friday, Oct. 9, at www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org. The cost of each course ranges from $40 to $85 for Pasadena Senior Center members and $50 to $95 for non-members. Scholarships for low-income seniors are available on a limited basis.
