Sleeping Soundly

Did You Know?

There are many reasons why older people may not get enough sleep at night. Illness, pain, daytime napping and medications can be some of the reasons. Here are some tips to get a better rest:

  • Follow a regular sleep schedule and try to avoid napping in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Develop a bedtime routine which helps you relax such as watching tv, reading a book, listening to music or soaking in a warm bath.
  • Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and have comfortable bedding. -Do not exercise within three hours of your bedtime.
  • Make an effort to get some sunlight each day.
  • Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime but a light snack can be helpful.
  • Stay away from caffeine and alcohol late in the day and other beverages in the evening.
