FREE NOVEMBER EVENTS AT PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

There is something for everyone 50 and older in November at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St.

You do not have to be a member to attend. Some events require advance reservations as noted.

Friday Movie Matinees – Fridays, Nov. 1 to 15, at 1 p.m. Everyone enjoys movies and the pleasures they bring. Nov. 1: The documentary “Pavarotti” (2019, PG) directed by Ron Howard puts audiences front row center for an exploration of Luciano Pavarotti – the man, the voice, the legend who brought opera to the people. Nov. 8: “Aladdin” (2019, PG) starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud. A street urchin who frees a genie from a lamp soon has his wishes granted and is transformed into a charming prince, but an evil sorcerer becomes obsessed with securing the lamp for his own sinister purposes. Nov. 15: “Yesterday” (2019, PG-13) starring Himesh Patel and Lily James. A struggling singer-songwriter’s dreams of fame are fading rapidly in his tiny English seaside village, but after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, he discovers The Beatles never existed and finds himself the only person on earth who knows their music.

Rediscovering Hope – Thursdays, Nov. 7 to 21, at 3 p.m. If you are trying to cope with the loss of a loved one, you are not alone. This group is for people experiencing grief. Come and talk, or just listen. For more information call 626-918-2273, ext. 7455.

Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy – Wednesdays, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Receive counseling and advocacy on issues related to Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Part D and Cal MediConnect. Caregiver Education and Support Group – Wednesdays, Nov. 6 and 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. – Whether you care for an aging parent or disabled spouse, a child with physical or mental disabilities, or are a caregiver in any other situation, you are facing a challenging new role with responsibilities you did not anticipate. Be part of this group to gain valuable information and support from others experiencing similar circumstances. Presented by the USC Family Caregiver Support Center.

Scenic Walks Club – Wednesdays, Nov. 6 to 27, at 9 a.m. Join members of the Scenic Walks Club and get some exercise taking leisurely walks to local outdoor destinations. Flu Shot Clinic – Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the influenza vaccine as the best way to protect against the flu and prevent its spread. Senior Care for Veterans: Aid and Attendance Benefit – Thursday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. The Aid and Attendance program is part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Improved Pension, a monetary benefit that helps eligible veterans and their surviving spouses (or solely spouses in case of veterans’ deaths) pay for assistance needed for everyday functioning such as eating, bathing, dressing and medication management. Braille Class – Fridays, Nov. 8 and 15, from noon to 2 p.m. Educational programming will be combined with speakers and a support group for people with low vision. Nov. 8: Living with vision loss – simple cooking tools, tips and techniques. Nov. 15: Labeling household items and medications, maintaining independence, and sensory awareness demonstration. Friends and family members are invited to the classes as well so they will gain an understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with vision loss.

Veterans Day Treats at the Coffee Bar – Monday, Nov. 11, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. In honor of our veterans, free coffee and patriotic-themed treats will be served at the coffee bar in the front lobby.

Case Management – Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Get assistance from the Human Services Association for issues such as meals, paperwork, transportation options and home care services. Cultural Thursdays: Great American Songwriters/Lerner & Loewe – Thursday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. Join pianist Bob Lipson and commentator/vocalist Don Snyder for a fun and interactive program titled “They Blended Broadway and Vienna: Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe” featuring the songwriters’ hits from their Broadway shows including “My Fair Lady,” “Camelot” and “Gigi.”

Health Information Fair – Friday, Nov. 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. Services include blood pressure, glucose and hearing screenings. Representatives from health care and community resources will be available.

GRACE/LANDING – Friday, Nov. 15, at 3:30 p.m. MUSE/IQUE ON TOUR guest artists will explore music from their upcoming concert GRACE/LANDING about Elvis Presley and the gospel roots of early rock hysteria. A limited number of complimentary tickets to the Nov. 17 MUSE/IQUE concert will be available to people who attend the Nov. 15 event and register in advance at the Welcome Desk.

LA Opera Talk: The Magic Flute – Monday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. An LA Opera community educator will share insights into the upcoming production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1791 German opera “The Magic Flute” (Die Zauberflöte), one of the most iconic operas of all time: a fairy tale about a prince who sets out with a magic flute, magic bells and the assistance of a bird catcher to rescue the daughter of the Queen of the Night from the supposedly dark lord Sarastro, but all is not as it seems.

Healthy Holiday Meal Planning – Thursday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m. It’s an age-old dilemma: how to reconcile our love of cooking and eating during the holidays with the importance of staying healthy. Learn tips for cooking healthy holiday meals for yourself and your loved ones. Presented by Regal Medical Group.

Mediation and Dispute Resolution – Thursday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m. Learn how to resolve conflicts with the help of a trained mediator, from property ownership to landlord/tenant disputes and more. Founded in 1960, the Pasadena Senior Center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that offers recreational, educational, wellness and social services to people ages 50 and older in a welcoming environment. Services are also provided for frail, low-income and homebound seniors.
