SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR FREE #AGEWELL DAY SEPTEMBER 28 AT PASADENA SENIOR CENTER
The Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., will be jumping with activities Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. when adults 50 and older attend the first annual #AgeWell Day that will feature workshops, miniclasses, expert speakers, health screenings and more. Participants do not have to be members of the Pasadena Senior Center to attend.
“There is no magic pill that can take the place of exercise and other life-sustaining activities for older adults,” said Akila Gibbs, executive director of the Pasadena Senior Center. “It is never too late to begin, so we’re offering this fun and informative day to help everyone get motivated and move toward healthier, more fulfilling lifestyles.”
The free event will have something for everyone and will focus on the importance of movement and staying active as older adults age.
- 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. – Coffee and breakfast breads will be available on the patio.
- 9 and 11 a.m. – Michael P. Dowd, City of Pasadena chief assistant prosecutor, will explain resources for the prevention and reporting of elder abuse.
- 10 and 11:30 a.m. – Physical therapist Emma Green will present “A Matter of Balance,” an overview on how to reduce the fear of falling and increase balance and activity levels.
- 9 to 11:30 a.m. – Dance and movement miniclasses: patterns and character of several ballroom dances with Tony Plasil at 9 a.m.; basics of line dancing with Gong Yu at 9:30 a.m.; essentials of Zumba Gold, a medium-intensity version of the popular workout with Kristen Cunningham at 10 a.m.; fundamentals of tap dancing with Pam Kay at 10:30 a.m.; essential elements of Tai Chi, a martial art that requires people to slow down and be mindful of their bodies, with Irene Yung at
- 11 a.m. and basics of Bolly X LIT, a Bollywood-inspired dance workout that combines dynamic choreography with the hottest music from around the world with Richa Jauhari at 11:30 a.m.
- 9 a.m. to noon – Arts and crafts activities including needle arts and Art Exploration Club will be demonstrated.
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Blood pressure monitoring and glucose screenings will be provided by Huntington Hospital, earthquake preparedness and safety demonstrations will be led by Pasadena Fire Department personnel, healthy cooking will be presented by Healthcare Partners and educational presentations about the U.S. Census will be presented the Los Angeles Regional Census Center of the U.S. Census Bureau.
- 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Billiards will be taught and played, an exhibition of Watercolor Class works will be on display and open houses will be hosted in the Library, Computer Lab and Sy Graff Fitness Center.
- 9:15 a.m. – Certified Pilates instructor Monica Blake will present “Pilates: A Mind-Body Connection” to share her own story of courage in physical recovery and inform participants about the benefits of mindfulness and how it relates to Pilates.
- 10:15 a.m. – Dr. Alan Chapman, weekday morning host on KUSC Classical Radio, will present “Music is Good for You” and explain the advantages of keeping music in our lives.
- 11:15 a.m. – Dr. Carolyn Kaloostian of USC Keck School of Medicine will present “Cognitive Health and Wellness,” a review of substances that put brain health at risk, preventive measures to maintain independence and indicators for when to see a geriatric medicine specialist.
- Noon – A free light lunch will be available on the patio.
- 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. – A dance party will feature ballroom, line, salsa, disco and more with singer Eric Torres.
