CELEBRATE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY WITH ‘JazzZone’ AT THE PASADENA SENIOR CENTER ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 17

Get your groove on and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the resilience of our community at a special concert with cool jazz group The JazzZone at the Pasadena Senior Center on Saturday, January 17 from 2 - 4 p.m.

The JazzZone is the group who makes cool jazz sizzle, and their jazz, blues, and

R & B will have you smiling and swaying. Dancing is encouraged!  This concert, held at the Pasadena Senior Center, is indoors and open to all. Bring your friends and neighbors to start the new year off right.

The event is free for Pasadena Senior Center members and non-members, and reservations are suggested. To register or for more information, visit www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org and click on Special Events, or call 626-795-4331.

The JazzZone is continuing the legacy of Jimmie Owens, a legacy of musical genius. James Owens grew up in East St. Louis and began his career in music classes at Lincoln High School with his brother, Hilton Owens, and the young Miles Davis. In carrying on that legacy, The JazzZone believes that jazz and blues music is a powerful force that brings people together and inspires positive change.

The Pasadena Senior Center’s mission is to improve the lives of older adults through caring service with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism. With 10,000 Americans per day becoming older adults, the center is a leader in addressing issues of aging and provides innovative, cutting-edge, nationally recognized programs for this population group.

As a donor-supported nonprofit, the center operates without any local, state or federal funding and provides more services to older adults than any other organization in the San Gabriel Valley. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. To learn more visit www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org or call 626-795-4331.

Help Us Support Hungry Seniors

Give Today to Help Us Support Hungry Seniors

With CalFresh (California’s SNAP) benefits suspended due to the federal shutdown, the Pasadena Senior Center is preparing for its largest food distribution yet on Friday, November 7, just ahead of Thanksgiving.

“CalFresh was the difference between a stocked fridge and an empty one,” said Akila Gibbs, Executive Director. “Now, many older adults are facing hunger for the holidays.”

The Center serves 500 seniors monthly through its food program with the LA Regional Food Bank, offering shelf-stable items, fresh produce, and holiday grocery gift cards. It also raises funds year-round to provide fresh meat and vegetables, ensuring older adults receive balanced, nutritious meals.

With 14% of Pasadena seniors living in poverty, demand is expected to surge.

Acknowledging Loss Discussion Support Group

Healing Begins When We Honor What is Gone

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May 6, 2025 until December 23, 2026
First Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m., in person
Second Wednesdays at Noon, via Zoom

Presented in partnership with Foundation for Senior Services

Loss isn’t just about what’s missing—it’s about what mattered. In a culture that rushes to “move on,” we often bypass the most essential parts of true healing and personal growth—to actively engage in the full range of our emotions and begin to honor the experience of grief and loss. This is not about fixing or forgetting—it’s about integrating memories in a way that brings peace, meaning, and wholeness to our lives. Join these discussion groups to share experiences and receive support from others in a compassionate, safe, and confidential space as we work through the healing journey. For more information contact the Welcome Desk at (626) 795-4331. To contact Foundation for Senior Services call (855) 836–0807 or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link for Wednesdays. Please use the registration button to receive the link.

What is FEMA

You can reach FEMA by calling 1 (800) 621-3362.

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, works by responding to major disasters declared by the President, providing financial assistance and support to individuals and communities affected by the disaster, including housing assistance, home repairs, and other essential needs, upon request from the state government or tribal leaders, only when a disaster is declared in a specific area; individuals must register with FEMA to be eligible for assistance and verify their damages through an inspection process. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Key points about how FEMA functions: [2, 5, 6]

  • Disaster Declaration: A state governor or tribal leader must request a disaster declaration from the federal government for FEMA to activate in a region. [2, 5, 6]
  • Registration: Individuals impacted by the disaster need to register with FEMA to apply for assistance, usually through a phone number or online portal. [1, 3, 7]
  • Eligibility Check: FEMA verifies the applicant's identity and assesses the damage to their property to determine eligibility for assistance. [1, 3, 8]
  • Assistance Types: FEMA may provide financial aid for temporary housing, home repairs, personal property replacement, and other disaster-related expenses depending on the situation. [1, 4, 9]
  • Inspection Process: FEMA may conduct an in-person inspection of the damaged property to assess the extent of the damage. [1, 3, 10]
  • Coordination with Local Agencies: FEMA works in collaboration with state and local emergency management agencies to coordinate response efforts. [2, 5, 11]

Important aspects of FEMA: [2, 12, 13]

  • Pre-Disaster Preparedness: FEMA also focuses on disaster preparedness activities like public education campaigns and community planning to mitigate future disaster impacts. [2, 12, 13]
  • Public Assistance: FEMA can provide funding to local governments and certain non-profit organizations to help them recover from a disaster by repairing public infrastructure. [2, 5, 14]
  • Insurance Interaction: FEMA assistance is typically provided for damages not covered by insurance, so applicants must submit information about their insurance claims. [1, 3, 6]
