FREE AUGUST EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER
Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout August.
Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required by visiting www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org and clicking on Activities & Events, Lectures & Classes or Resources. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.
Don’t Let Your Estate Plan Become Outdated – Thursday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Learn how to avoid the state’s default estate plan – which leaves little or no room for varying interpretation – and make your wishes known so your loved ones will be taken care of financially after you pass away. Presented by Joe Engle, an attorney whose specialty is guiding people through the estate planning process. Monthly Food Distribution — Friday, Aug. 4, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Opening boxes on the premises is prohibited. Movie Matinees – Fridays, Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25 , at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. Aug. 4: “Manchester by the Sea” (2016, R) starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. After the death of his brother, a depressed Boston janitor moves back to the fishing village where his family has lived for decades and is asked to take care of his teenage nephew, and through this upheaval in his life he is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife and this community where he was born and raised. Aug. 11: “Where the Crawdads Sing” (2020, PG-13) starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Taylor John Smith. A young woman who raised herself in the marshes of the deep south becomes a suspect in the murder of a man with whom she was once romantically involved. When a young family moves in near an old grump who has given up on life following the loss of his wife, they develop a friendship that will turn his world around. Standards and Show Tunes with Bob, Don and Dave – Thursday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls -- Fridays, Aug. 11 to Sept. 29, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. If you’re not living life to the fullest because you’re afraid of falling, this eight-week, interactive workshop is for you. Learn how to reduce the fear of falling and increase balance, activity levels, confidence and independence. Summer Concert Series – Mondays, Aug. 14 to Sept. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. The center will be transformed into a live music venue where everyone will enjoy a variety of styles. Aug. 14 on the shady, tree-lined patio: Dad’s Band Plus One (New Orleans jazz). Aug. 21 on the patio: JazzZone (classic jazz, funk and R&B). Aug. 28 on the patio: Susie Hansen Latin Band (Salsa Rhythms). Sept. 4 in the Scott Pavilion: Labor Day concert by The Great American Swing Band (Big Band). Each concert date will feature two sets by the same musical group – one at 5 p.m. and another at 6 p.m. Come for one or stay for both! Bring your own snacks, beverages and/or picnic dinner. Music on the Patio: Sing-a-long with Susan Rozler – Thursday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Join entertainer/singer/songwriter Susan Rozler on the shady, tree-lined patio for an afternoon of fun music. Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, Aug. 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Health fair services indoors will include blood pressure and glucose testing, hearing tests, updates in Medicare health plans, resources and more. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Cultural Thursday: Backstage at Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show – Thursday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be part of “The Tonight Show” during Johnny Carson’s 30-year reign as host from 1962 to 1992? Barbara Meltzer, assistant to the producers of the show for 10 years during that period, will be in conversation with Annie Laskey, PSC’s events director, for a fun and fascinating behind-the-scenes look at television history. Take Care of Your Mental Health -- Thursday, August 31 at 10:00 a.m. via Zoom. In addition to online classes, onsite events and other activities, members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a quarterly online magazine, free food delivery for older adults in need, COVID updates specifically for older adults and more.
The center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. Extended summer hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Rooms are sanitized after each use. Masks are optional.
