FREE JUNE EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout May.

Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.

Bilingual Tech Help Program — Mondays, June 3 to 24 at 10 a.m., onsite in Computer Lab at Pasadena Senior Center. Need help with your smart phone, tablet or computer?  Learn how to navigate social media platforms, send texts, check voicemails, set alarms, and more. Our experienced instructor, Mariana Porras, will be there to guide you every step of the way. Make the most of your devices and explore the possibilities of the digital world. No registration is necessary.

Card Making Workshop Monday, June 3 at 1:30 p.m., onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of card making. Whether you are a seasoned pro or just starting out, this workshop is open to all members and their guests. So, bring along your friends, family, or anyone who loves getting their hands dirty with arts and crafts. All the supplies you need will be provided, so you do not have to worry about a thing. “Taking Care of Business:” Men’s Health — Thursday, June 6 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. When it comes to taking care of personal health, men could do a lot better. Men can have many responsibilities in their lives and health should be at the top of the list. Men, join us to learn what you can do to take better care of yourself and take care of business, too, in this presentation by Independence at Home. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. Legal Consultations — Thursday, June 6, at 10 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Free legal consultations only on conservatorship, wills/trusts, estate planning and durable power of attorney. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the Welcome Desk at 626-795-4331.

Food Bank Distribution — Friday, June 7, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Distribution will take place in the parking lot. You must be 60+ and present your ID to receive a box of groceries from the L.A. Regional Food Bank. We recommend you bring a personal pull-behind shopping cart to take your box home. Movie Matinees — Fridays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. June 7: The Parent Trap” (1961, rated G) — In this Disney classic, Hayley Mills plays twins who, unknown to their divorced parents, meet at a summer camp. Products of single parent households (Brian Keith and Maureen O’Hara), they switch places so they can meet the parent they never knew, and then contrive to reunite them. June 14: “The Princess Bride” (1987, PG) —‘Inconceivable!” just one of the iconic lines from this much-loved film adapted from the William Goldman novel. A fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman (Robin Wright) and her one true love (Cary Elwes), who must find her after a long separation and save her from an evil prince (Chris Sarandon). Also starring Peter Falk, Mandy Pantinkin, and Andre the Giant. June 21: “Oppenheimer” (2023, R) —Tells the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the physicist appointed by the U.S. Government to develop the top-secret Manhattan Project during World War II. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world`s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history. Also starring Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Rami Malek. June 28:“American Fiction” (2023, R) — This dark comedy, winner of the 2023 Academy Award for best adapted screenplay, tells the tale of Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a novelist who is fed up with the establishment profiting from Black entertainment. Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) uses a pen name to write an outlandish ‘Black” book that propels him into the heart of the hypocrisy and madness he claims to disdain. Also starring Tracee Ellis Ross. Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program — Tuesday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to Noon onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. There’s a lot to know about Medicare and now there’s help to make sense of it all. Each month, volunteer counselors provide unbiased information, counseling, and assistance on Medicare and related health care coverage. All HICAP Volunteer Counselors are trained by the Center for Health Care Rights and are registered with the California Department of Aging. Pet Disaster Preparedness —Thursday, June 13 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. What do you do when there is a pet disaster? Has the cat taken over the house? Have your pets become more and more unruly, refusing to comply with obedience commands? Come to this lecture, presented by Foundation for Senior Services, which is part two of our series on pets in our golden years, to see what you can do about it! Therapeutic Music Classes — Fridays, June 14,21, & 28, July 5,12,& 19 at 10 a.m. Learn how to play some of America’s favorite songs on the xylophone through curated music sheets in this presentation by PSC in partnership with The Melody Initiative. With instructors Addison Lee and Kate Chun, participants will be able to participate in music-related activities such as sing-along, musical memories, song writing and lyric analysis etc. Instruments will be provided. Age Well Roundtable: What's On Your Mind? Let's Talk About It! — Friday, June 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Join in a supportive and confidential setting where participants are seen, heard and understood. Roundtables provide an environment to listen and learn from one another, share experiences and insights, where all viewpoints, fears and feelings are valued by the group. Based on participant needs and requests, specialists will address specific topics of interest in the on-going roundtable sessions. Health Fair Friday, June 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Registered Nurse Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital will be doing blood pressure and glucose testing. The Hear Center will be doing free hearing screenings. Insurance representatives will be on hand to show different Medicare health plans and answer questions.

Free Produce Distribution on the Patio — Friday, June 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. (while supplies last) onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Pre-assembled bags of vegetables will be distributed. Nutritious foods will be available to visitors at the Pasadena Senior Center. We recommend that you bring bags or a personal pull-behind cart to take your produce home. Provided by the Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Registration is not required.

Mediation, Conflict and Dispute Resolutions — Thursday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about mediation, a highly successful dispute resolution process that provides an opportunity to resolve conflicts without going to court. Mediation can help resolve landlord-tenant disputes, consumer-debt, neighbor-neighbor, and business, organization/agencies, family-domestic, and workplace/employment issues. The Unseen Impact of Loneliness on Aging Brains — Thursday, June 27 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Learn more about why connection with others is a pivotal factor in the health of our brains as we age, in this presentation by Dr. Shadi Gholizadeh, Ph.D. of TheKey, an organization that provides in-home, long-term care for the ageing in the home. We will share an article spotlighting insights by Dr. William Mobley, a member of TheKey’s Scientific Advisory Board and Distinguished Professor of Neurology at UC San Diego. The article outlines the impact of loneliness, how to identify it in our loved ones, and details six practical steps to combat loneliness.
