#AGEWELL DAY IS SEPTEMBER 28 AT PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

The Pasadena Senior Center will be hopping with activities Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the free, fun and informative #AgeWell Day.

There will be something for everyone 50 and older at this annual event including balance testing, wellness and safety information. The day also includes movement activities such as yoga and tai chi, information about successful retirement strategies, how to make the most of smartphones and the latest updates about medical marijuana and CBD oil. New this year, an introduction to improv acting, prevention of scams against older adults including fraud and identity theft, a poetry reading and writing workshop, a “Sports Center” featuring local sports activities for older adults, live entertainment, refreshments and much more.

Anthony How MD from the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center will present the keynote address entitled “How to #AgeWell: 10 Bold Ideas to Help Answer a New Old Question.”

Studies by the National Institutes of Health have shown that taking it easy in retirement can be quite risky. Often, inactivity of the brain and body is more to blame than age when older adults lose the ability to perform normal activities of daily living. This can lead to diminishing independence, more doctor visits, more hospitalizations and more dependence on prescription medications.

“For older adults, this is the time of life when new doors open and new experiences beckon. Staying active as you age can work wonders for your physical and mental health and lead to a longer, more fulfilling life with greater independence,” said Akila Gibbs, executive director at the Pasadena Senior Center. “If you’re not as active as you’d like to be, it’s never too late to begin, and if you’re already active and want to add some additional variety, now is the time.”
