FREE OCTOBER EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout October.

Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.

Hoarding, Collecting, and Clutter: What’s the Difference? — Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. via Zoom.  Elisa Fonseca, a knowledgeable professional from L.A. Mental Health, who will guide us in understanding the critical distinctions between collecting, cluttering, and hoarding, will lead this session.  By attending, you will not only gain valuable information about the need for treatment for those who may be struggling To register or for more information visit www.pasadenaseniorcenter.organd click on Lectures & Classes, then Informational Lectures or call 626-795-4331. Everyone who registers will receive a Zoom link to access the discussion.

Legal Consultations — Thursday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Free legal consultations only on conservatorship, wills/trusts, estate planning and durable power of attorney. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 626-795-4331.

Monthly L.A. Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Oct. 4, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Proof of income and California ID are required. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. FREE MOVIE MATINEES – Fridays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, at 1 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest.

October 4: “Witness for the Prosecution” (1957, not rated) stars Tyrone Power as the affable Leonard Vole, who is being tried for the murder of a wealthy woman by legendary lawyer Sir Wilfrid Robarts (Charles Laughton). Unfortunately, Leonard’s alibi depends on the testimony of his callous wife Christine (Marlene Dietrich).

October 11: “My Cousin Vinny” (1992, R) New York lawyer Vinny (Joe Pesci) has never won a case, but when his teenage cousin Bill (Ralph Macchio) and friend Stan are accused of murder in a backwater Alabama town, it’s up to Vinny to save the day! Also stars Marisa Tomei and Fred Gwynne.

October 18: “Beetlejuice” (1988, PG) The spirits of a deceased couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) are harassed by an unbearable family (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffery Jones, Winona Ryder), and must hire a crazy spirit named Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to drive them out.

October 25: “Ghostbusters” (1984, PG-13) Three parapsychologists (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon) and a subway worker (Leslie Jones) in Manhattan band together to stop a paranormal, otherworldly threat from 1,000 mischievous ghouls.

Bilingual Tech Help — Mondays, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 10 a.m. onsite in the Technology Lab at Pasadena Senior Center. Need help with your smart phone, tablet or computer? Learn how to navigate social media platforms, send texts, check voicemails, set alarms and more. Our experienced instructor, Mariana Porras, will be there to guide you every step of the way. Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program — Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to Noon onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. There’s a lot to know about Medicare and now there’s help to make sense of it all. Each month, volunteer counselors provide unbiased information, counseling, and assistance on Medicare and related health care coverage. All HICAP Volunteer Counselors are trained by the Center for Health Care Rights and are registered with the California Department of Aging. To make a required appointment, call 626-795-4331.

“Let’s Laugh” A Laughter Yoga Series —Thursdays, Oct. 10 to 31 at 10 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Do you have enough laughter in your life? Did you know that you can turn laughing into exercise? Join us to improve your health and mood. Laughter Yoga is a combination of laughter exercises with yoga breathing. Connect with others and boost overall well-being. Presented by Independence at Home, a Scan Community Service. Medicare Resource Fair — Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Medicare Open Enrollment is October 15 to December 7, 2024! During “Open Enrollment” individuals will be able to make changes to their medical insurance for 2025. Reassessing health care needs each year and comparing programs can help keep costs down and maximize benefits. Checking your current Medicare and prescription drug plans with other programs, and making any necessary changes ensures that you receive the best possible health care. We will have over 20 vendors to give you all the information needed to help you make your best choices. No reservations are needed.

Depression: Common, Disabling, Unrecognized, Treatable — Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. How do you know when it’s more than just the blues? How do you know when it’s depression? Depression is common and happens to one out of 20 adults every year. But you don’t have to suffer with depression, treatments are available to help you feel better. Spend some time with us to learn how to determine if it’s more than just the blues and what you can do about it. Presented by Independence at Home, a Scan Community Service. November Ballot Measures: What you need to Know —Thursday, Oct. 17 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center.  Presented by the League of Women Voters, Pasadena Area. Questions about the measures on the November ballot? The League of Women Voters will present an unbiased overview of the ten state measures and eight Pasadena/PUSD measures on the ballot. Free Produce Distribution on the Patio — Friday, Oct. 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. (while supplies last) onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Pre-assembled bags of vegetables will be distributed. Nutritious foods will be available to visitors at the Pasadena Senior Center. We recommend that you bring bags or a personal pull-behind cart to take your produce home. Health Fair — Friday, Oct. 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Registered Nurse Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital will be doing blood pressure and glucose testing. The Hear Center will provide free hearing screenings. Insurance representatives will be on hand to show different Medicare health plans, and answer questions. Registration is not required. Age Well Roundtable: What's On Your Mind? Let's Talk About It! — Friday, Oct. 18 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Join in a supportive and confidential setting where participants are seen, heard and understood. Roundtables provide an environment to listen and learn from one another, share experiences and insights, where all viewpoints, fears and feelings are valued by the group. Based on participant needs and requests, we will address specific topics of interest in the on-going roundtable sessions. Presented by Foundation for Senior Service. Registration is requested.

MUSE/IQUE Offstage Encounters — Monday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. This is an informal hour featuring guest artists from MUSE/IQUE’s 2024 concert season Make Some Noise: Music and Stories of American Defiance and Hope. Don’t miss this special opportunity to get to know some very talented people. Ignite Your Creative Journey with Hypnotherapy — Thursday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. This interactive presentation, led by a qualified Life Transitions Hypnotherapist, is designed to empower older adults in their quest for personal growth and artistic expression. This is a unique opportunity to explore the transformative effects of hypnotherapy. Mediation, Conflict and Dispute Resolutions — Thursday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about mediation, a highly successful dispute resolution process that provides an opportunity to resolve conflicts without going to court. Mediation can help resolve landlord-tenant disputes, consumer-debt, neighbor-neighbor, and business, organization/agencies, family-domestic, and workplace/employment issues. Preserving your Memory and More — Thursday, Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. This engaging session, is thoughtfully designed to address the common challenges of forgetfulness that many of us experience as we age. In this warm and supportive environment, you will discover practical tips and effective brain exercises aimed at sharpening your cognitive function and minimizing those moments of forgetfulness. Our goal is to empower you with knowledge and strategies that promote mental wellness, enhancing your quality of life. Presented by L.A. Mental Health. The Pasadena Senior Center’s mission is to improve the lives of older adults through caring service with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism. With 10,000 Americans per day becoming older adults, the center is a leader in addressing the issues of aging and provides highly innovative, nationally recognized programs for this population group.

As a donor-supported nonprofit, the center operates without any local, state or federal funding and provides more services to older adults in the San Gabriel Valley than any other organization.
