FREE NOVEMBER EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER
 
 
Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout October.
 
Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.

Monthly L.A. Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Nov. 1 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center.
Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Proof of income and California ID are required. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Crafting Your Life Story — Fridays, Nov. 1, 8 and 15 at 1:30 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Are you craving self-reflection, self-discovery, and improved self-esteem? Do you have memories and family history that you would like to preserve? This memoir class, presented by Carrie Hawthorne, will provide you with the fundamentals to write your life story. We will discuss your unique point of view, how to engage your senses in writing, and the importance of specificity and details. Designed for beginners as well as seasoned writers, this class will engage your brain, your heart, and your soul. Dive into your memories and experience the therapeutic value of getting it all down on paper. Fun exercises will help you remember the adventures you have had and the lessons you learned. Dia de los Muertos: Day of the Dead Celebration with the Latino Club —Friday, Nov. 1 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. We invite you to enjoy a potluck-style community event! Each participant can bring a dish to share and enjoy an afternoon full of culture, tradition, and flavors. It is a perfect opportunity to honor our loved ones and celebrate this beautiful Mexican tradition. Don’t miss this unique and lively celebration! Please bring a picture of a loved one you would like to remember to be part of our Day of the Dead community altar. Bilingual Tech Help — Mondays, Nov. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 10 a.m. onsite in the Technology Lab at Pasadena Senior Center. Need help with your smart phone, tablet or computer? Learn how to navigate social media platforms, send texts, check voicemails, set alarms and more. Our experienced instructor, Mariana Porras, will be there to guide you every step of the way. Diabetes Education Empowerment Program (DEEP) — Wednesdays, Nov. 6 to Dec. 11 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Need help managing pre-diabetes or diabetes? This program encourages lifestyle changes while learning about the condition and how it affects health. Join us for this free self-management course offered in a relaxed and supportive environment. Healthy Bone Series — Thursdays, November 7, 14 and 21 at 10 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Presented by Independence at Home a Scan Community Service. This series will provide essential insights into bone health basics, including a thorough understanding of osteoporosis. Participants will also gain valuable knowledge on living better with arthritis and practical strategies for fall prevention. By attending, you not only empower yourself with information but also connect with others who share similar experiences and concerns, creating a supportive network. Registration is required. Active Every Day — Thursday, November 7 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Staying active doesn’t mean it’s necessary to go run a mile every day. Just start exercising. There are lots of ways to stay active and healthy. Learn about what you can do to stay active every day in this webinar presented by Independence at Home, a Scan Community Service. Flu Shot and COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic— Thursday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the flu vaccine as the best way to protect people against the flu and prevent its spread. For protection against COVID-19 vaccine will be available at the clinic for all ages. Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins will be accepted. MOVIES ON FRIDAYS AT 1:00 p.m.
Free Movie Matinees – Fridays, Nov. 8, 15 and 22, at 1 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest.

From the day he picks up his sledgehammer, George Monroe embarks on a grand adventure that will shatter expectations and build a foundation for many different dreams among his family and neighbors. November 15: “Now Voyager” (1942, not rated) Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is a neurotic mess. But after a stint in a sanatorium where she receives the attention of Dr. Jasquith (Claude Rains), Charlotte comes out of her shell and finds love with Jerry (Paul Henreid).
November 22: “Son-in-Law” (1993, PG13) Having gotten a taste of college life, a drastically-changed farm girl (Carla Gugino) returns home for Thanksgiving break with her best friend, a flamboyant party animal (Pauly Shore) who is clearly a fish out of water in a small farm town.

Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program —Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to Noon onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. There’s a lot to know about Medicare and now there’s help to make sense of it all. Each month, volunteer counselors provide unbiased information, counseling, and assistance on Medicare and related health care coverage. All HICAP Volunteer Counselors are trained by the Center for Health Care Rights and are registered with the California Department of Aging. Home Modifications for Safety and Fall Prevention — Thursday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. We had to modify our home for safety for our young children. As we age, it's prudent to make sure we have the right modifications and technology to make home an active and strategic part of our life. Join us as we talk through the most strategic and crucial ways to help us age at home for as long as possible in this webinar from Foundation for Senior Services. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link, and can be made by clicking this link.  
 
Health Fair — Friday, Nov. 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Registered Nurse Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital will be doing blood pressure and glucose testing. The Hear Center will provide free hearing screenings. Insurance representatives will be on hand to show different Medicare health plans, and answer questions. Registration is not required. MUSE/IQUE Offstage Encounters — Monday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. This is an informal hour featuring guest artists from MUSE/IQUE’s 2024 concert season Make Some Noise: Music and Stories of American Defiance and Hope.  Don’t miss this special opportunity to get to know some very talented people. Mediation, Conflict and Dispute Resolutions — Thursday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about mediation, a highly successful dispute resolution process that provides an opportunity to resolve conflicts without going to court. Mediation can help resolve landlord-tenant disputes, consumer-debt, neighbor-neighbor, and business, organization/agencies, family-domestic, and workplace/employment issues. Holiday Blues — Thursday, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Holidays can be a challenging time for those who have suffered losses or who are feeling alone and without family or social support. This seasonal presentation, presented by the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health, discusses strategies to combat feelings of sadness or the blues during the winter holidays. The Pasadena Senior Center’s mission is to improve the lives of older adults through caring service with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism. With 10,000 Americans per day becoming older adults, the center is a leader in addressing the issues of aging and provides highly innovative, nationally recognized programs for this population group.
 
As a donor-supported nonprofit, the center operates without any local, state or federal funding and provides more services to older adults in the San Gabriel Valley than any other organization.
