FREE DECEMBER EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout October.

Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.

Bilingual Tech Help — Mondays, Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 10 a.m. onsite in the Technology Lab at Pasadena Senior Center. Need help with your smart phone, tablet or computer? Learn how to navigate social media platforms, send texts, check voicemails, set alarms and more. Our experienced instructor, Mariana Porras, will be there to guide you every step of the way. Let’s Talk Lecture: A New Year a Healthier You — Thursday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Thinking about what your new year resolutions will be? Coming up with them is easy enough but keeping them is harder to do. Join us to learn how to make and keep new year resolutions for a healthier you. Presented by Independence at Home, a Scan Community Service. Legal Consultations — Thursday, Dec. 5, a 10 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Free legal consultations only on conservatorship, wills/trusts, estate planning and durable power of attorney. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 626-795-4331.

Monthly L.A. Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Dec. 6 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Proof of income and California ID are required. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Free Movie Matinees – Fridays, Dec. 6 13, 20 and 27, at 1 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. December 6: “Collateral Beauty” (2016, PG-13). Retreating from life after a tragedy, a successful New York advertising executive (Will Smith) questions the universe by writing to Love, Time and Death. Receiving unexpected answers, he begins to see how thee things interlock and how even loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty. Also starring Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, Michael Peña, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley. December 13: “White Christmas” (1954, NR) is the heartwarming holiday classic that tells the story of singers Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye), a successful song and dance team who team up with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to save the failing Vermont inn of their former World War II commanding general (Dean Jagger). December 20: “Miracle on 34th Street” (1942, NR). After a divorced New York working mother (Maureen O’Hara) hires a nice old man (Edmund Gwenn) to play the Macy’s Santa Claus, she is startled by his claim to be the genuine article. When his sanity is questioned by the Macy’s psychologist, a lawyer (John Payne) defends him in court by arguing that he’s not mistaken. Also starring Natalie Wood and William Frawley. December 27: “Rumble Fish” (1983, R). Disaffected and restless, Rusty James (Matt Dillon) has been abandoned by his mother and is living with his alcoholic father (Dennis Hopper). He struggles to live up to his legendary older brother’s (Mickey Rourke) criminal reputation. Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program — Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. There’s a lot to know about Medicare and now there’s help to make sense of it all. Each month, volunteer counselors provide unbiased information, counseling, and assistance on Medicare and related health care coverage. All HICAP Volunteer Counselors are trained by the Center for Health Care Rights and are registered with the California Department of Aging. Appointments are required and can be made by visiting the Welcome Desk.

Let’s Talk Lecture: What Happens if You Missed the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period — Thursday, Dec. 12 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. You lost track of time and missed Medicare open enrollment. Are you doomed? Come figure out how you can still take control of your health with a post-deadline to-do-list.  Presented by Foundation for Senior Services. Holiday Luncheon for Veterans — Friday, Dec. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center.  Are you a veteran?  The Pasadena Senior Center, in association with the Pipia/Ma Welcome Home Fund, Pasadena Community Foundation Fund, invites you and a guest to a special holiday luncheon for veterans and active service members, followed by a public screening of the beloved 1954 musical ‘White Christmas.’ Please note that the luncheon is limited to veterans and their guests only. The film is open to all. Space for the luncheon is limited. Reservations are required. Latino Club Zumba Christmas Fitness Concert — Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Celebrate the holiday season with fun, festive music, and energetic Zumba routines designed for all fitness levels. Whether you’re a seasoned Zumba enthusiast or trying it for the first time, this special event, sponsored by Alignment Health, is perfect for older adults looking to stay active, have fun, and spread some holiday cheer. Enjoy a lively workout in a supportive and joyful atmosphere. Let’s dance into the holiday season with health, fitness, and fun! Registration is required and cost is $10 for all participants. Mediation, Conflict and Dispute Resolutions — Thursday, Dec. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about mediation, a highly successful dispute resolution process that provides an opportunity to resolve conflicts without going to court. Mediation can help resolve landlord-tenant disputes, consumer-debt, neighbor-neighbor, and business, organization/agencies, family-domestic, and workplace/employment issues. Let’s Talk Lecture: Discover Your Passion — Thursday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Discovering your passion can give new meaning to your life. This presentation will help you reflect on feelings of joy and happiness. The discussion will lead to the (re)discovery of passion and purpose by exploring a whole new world. Presented by Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. Health Fair — Friday, Dec. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Registered Nurse Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital will be doing blood pressure and glucose testing. The Hear Center will provide free hearing screenings. Insurance representatives will be on hand to show different Medicare health plans, and answer questions. Registration is not required. Free Produce Distribution on the Patio — Friday, Dec. 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. (while supplies last) onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. Pre-assembled bags of vegetables will be distributed. Nutritious foods will be available to visitors at the Pasadena Senior Center. We recommend that you bring bags or a personal pull-behind cart to take your produce home. Creative Sketching — Friday, December 20 at 2 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center. In this class, we will focus on imaginative sketchbook work where creativity takes the lead over traditional drawing techniques. While some drawing experience is helpful, it is not required as we will explore personal expression and cultivate curiosity through experimentation. Expect to walk away with a sketchbook filled with artwork personal to each individual and the tools to keep your creative flame alight wherever it leads you. The Pasadena Senior Center’s mission is to improve the lives of older adults through caring service with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism. With 10,000 Americans per day becoming older adults, the center is a leader in addressing the issues of aging and provides highly innovative, nationally recognized programs for this population group.

As a donor-supported nonprofit, the center operates without any local, state or federal funding and provides more services to older adults in the San Gabriel Valley than any other organization.
