PASADENA SENIOR CENTER TO HOST FREE LUNG CAPACITY TESTING AND AIR PURIFIER DISTRIBUTION IN RESPONSE TO WILDFIRE SMOKE EFFECTS

In the aftermath of the recent wildfires, many residents continue to experience adverse effects on their lung health. Recognizing the ongoing risk, especially to vulnerable populations, Pasadena Senior Center, in partnership with Breathe Southern California, announces a vital community health initiative on Friday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. – 11 p.m. at Pasadena Senior Center.

The smoke from wildfires poses significant health risks, particularly to older adults, individuals with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bronchitis, chronic heart disease, or diabetes. These risks persist even for those who live far from the directly affected areas. To address these concerns, the Pasadena Senior Center will incorporate free lung capacity testing and air purifier distribution into its upcoming monthly health fair.

The event will feature spirometry testing, an essential tool in assessing respiratory health. Spirometry measures the amount of air an individual can inhale and exhale, as well as the speed at which air can be expelled from the lungs. These tests can identify potential obstructions in the lungs, offering invaluable insights into one’s respiratory health. Participants will receive their results free of charge, along with a comprehensive explanation of their scores.

In addition to the testing, attendees identified with a need will receive air purifiers donated by Breathe Southern California. Educational materials regarding lung health and how to protect oneself from smoke and pollution will also be available.

This event is especially crucial for those with a history of smoking or exposure to pollution, as monitoring lung health over time can help prevent or manage potential issues. Those at risk, even without current symptoms, are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
