FREE AUGUST EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER
Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout August. Residency in Pasadena is not required to attend.
Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required. Registration links can be found at www.PasadenaSeniorCenter.org. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.
Movie Matinees – Fridays, Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. Aug. 1: “A Man Named Pearl” (2006, G) starring Scott Galloway and Brent Pierson. A heartwarming documentary of a sharecropper's son who is a self-taught topiary artist. Aug. 8: “Where the Boys Are” (1960, NR) Starring Dolores Heart and George Hamilton. On their search for romance and adventure, two Midwestern college girls find that their spring break trip isn’t all fun and games. Aug. 15 “Monsieur Lazhar” (2011, PG-13) Starring Mohamed Fellag and Sophie Nelisse. A recent emigrant of Algeria takes over a Canadian classroom after a teacher's tragic death. Aug. 22: “Imitation of Life” (1934, PG-13) Starring Claudette Colbert and Warren William. Two women from different racial backgrounds start a business on the Atlantic City boardwalk together, dealing with family and identity struggles along the way. Aug. 29: “Young at Heart” (2008, PG) A documentary about a senior citizens’ chorus that covers popular rock and soul music.

Monthly Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Aug. 1, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Opening boxes on the premises is prohibited. Guided Tours of Pasadena Senior Center – Mondays, Aug. 4, 11, 18, and 25, at noon and Thursdays, Aug. 7, 14, 21, and 28, at 10 a.m. onsite at PSC. Take a guided tour with a PSC ambassador and learn how the center can enhance your life. Peek in on various activities at the center, such as an art class, dance lessons, computer lab and dozens more, and learn everything else about this first- ever accredited senior center in California. Create and Bloom: A Floral Arrangement Workshop – Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center, presented by Alignment Healthcare. Join us for a hands-on experience where creativity blossoms! Get creative with fresh flowers in this lighthearted class! No experience needed just bring your love of blossoms and a smile. We’ll snip, arrange, and laugh our way to beautiful bouquets and good company. Registration is required. Grief and Loss – Thursday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. via Zoom, Presented by Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. Grief that comes with loss is a common stressor among older adults and can be a challenging experience. This presentation defines grief and loss, explains the components of the grief process, and describes the symptoms of grief to prepare participants for what to expect from losses. Tips are imparted to improve our ability to cope with and move on from loss. Registration is required for this online event. Smart Home, Smarter Living: Connecting & Staying Safe with Amazon Alexa – Mondays, Aug. 11 to 25, at 11 a.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center, Presented by Peter Matus.
This program is designed for older adults who do not have smart devices in their homes. We will show you to how to use Amazon Alexa for seamless communication and enhanced safety. Participants will learn how to make hands-free calls, send voice messages, and use Alexa to stay connected with loved ones effortlessly. We will also cover practical emergency features, including how to call for help using voice commands and set up essential alerts.
Summer Concert Series – Tuesdays, Aug. 12, 19, 26, and Monday, Sept. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center.

Join us for a special Summer Concert Series honoring the music of the decades our community has cherished through the years in our air-conditioned Pavilion. Each week features a different era of popular music — perfect for dancing, reminiscing, and celebrating together! Aug. 12 , 1980s Dance Party with the Michael Haggins Band. Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy – Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to Noon. The Center for Health Care Rights provides free Medicare and Medi-Cal counseling and advocacy services. Appointments are required and can be made by visiting the Welcome Desk.

Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, Aug. 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital will be doing blood pressure and glucose testing. The Hear Center will be doing free hearing screenings. Insurance representatives will be on hand to show different Medicare Health Plans, and answer questions that you may have. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last, courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Burnout Prevention & Self-Care for Caregivers – Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom, Presented by Foundation for Senior Services. Fall Prevention – Thursday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. via Zoom, Presented by CSC PACE Center. This informational presentation focuses on practical strategies to help older adults reduce the risk of falls and maintain independence. The presentation will cover key topics such as home safety modifications, balance and strength exercises, and proper footwear. Mediation and Dispute Resolution – Thursday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn how to resolve conflicts with the help of a trained mediator, including property ownership, landlord/tenant disputes, workplace/employment issues, family disagreements and more. Disaster Recovery Grief & Loss Support Group — Tuesdays and Wednesdays until Dec. 23 2026, Presented in Partnership with Foundation for Senior Services. The support group is for older adults, families, caregivers and survivors. Grief and loss groups provide a safe, compassionate, and confidential space to share experiences and receive support from others. There are two meeting types available. The first and third Tuesdays of the month at 3 p.m. on Zoom. The second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 11 a.m. on Zoom. Lunch Program – Ongoing weekdays at 11:30 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. If you are 60 or older, enjoy a hot lunch every Monday through Friday on a first-come, first-served basis. Home Tea Program – Ongoing monthly. Anyone 50 and older can sign up to receive tea and an inspirational card once a month. To participate in this program, call (626) 685-6732.
Food Pantry – Ongoing weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Don’t let financial hardship, being homebound or other issues prevent you from eating healthy food. Pasadena Senior Center volunteers deliver food and other supplies to your door. To request delivery, call (626) 685-6732 and leave a message. Someone will return your call as soon as possible.
