“UNDERSTANDING ARCHITECHURAL STYLES” IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ON TAP AT PASADENA SENIOR CENTER’S WINTER MASTERS SERIES

Art and architecture historian Eleanor Schrader will lead two new Masters Series sessions that will share how to ‘read’ the architecture of a building, draw conclusions about its history, and turn every outing into a historical adventure in “Understanding Architectural Styles’ beginning on Tuesday, January 13 and concluding on January 20 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center via Zoom.

To attend both lectures, tuition is only $30 for members and $36 for non-members. The lectures are presented online only via Zoom. Every building tells a story. In this two-part online class, art and architecture historian Eleanor Schrader will look at common commercial and residential styles in Southern California from the last 150 years and show how basic elements like roofline, ornamentation, height, and cladding (façade material) changes through the decades. You’ll learn how new technologies change tastes and styles, and how society’s tastes and needs change technology. You’ll never look at a building the same way again! 

• January 13:  Building the City: 1880-1925.  Highlights late 19^th and early 20^th Century styles such as Italianate, Victorian and Beaux-Arts architecture, with a side trip into Spanish Colonial Revival and Craftsman.
• January 20:  From Moderne to Modern: tracing the progression of 20^th Century Architecture from the elegant stylization of 1930s Art Deco to Mid-Century Modern minimalism, and on to contemporary boundary-pushing designs of the new millennium.

Eleanor Schrader is an award-winning educator, lecturer, and author. She lectures worldwide on the history of furniture, decorative arts, architecture, and interiors and leads art and architecture tours throughout the world.  She has been named a Distinguished Instructor at UCLA Extension and also serves as Professor Emeritus of Art and Architectural History at Santa Monica College. She has done graduate work in fine and decorative arts at Sotheby's Institute in London and New York and has served as a Design Review Commissioner for the City of Beverly Hills.
