PASADENA SENIOR CENTER HOSTS ‘THE MACHINERY OF THE MIND’ EXPLORING COGNITION AND EMOTION ON THURSDAY, APRIL 30
An inside look at the sophisticated biological system that underlie our thoughts and emotions will be explored as part of the Cultural Thursdays event series on site at the Pasadena Senior Center on Thursday, April 30 at 2 p.m.
UCLA’s Lindsay De Biase, Ph.D. and Laura DeNardo Ph.D. will lead “The Machinery of the Mind: The Science of Cognition and Emotion Across the Lifespan,” a ‘peek under the hood’ at the cutting-edge science of how our brains manage a lifetime of information.
The event is free for Pasadena Senior Center members and $5 for non-members, and reservations are suggested. To register, or for more information, visit pasadenaseniorcenter.org, then click on Lectures & Classes, then Cultural Thursdays.
Drs. De Biase and DeNardo will share current research on topics such as:
- Mechanisms of childhood amnesia: why do we forget our earliest experiences? Learn how brain cells ‘light up’ when we have a new experience and help us store and recall memories.
- How does early life stress increase risk for anxiety? Investigate how neurons and microglia—the immune cells of the brain—jointly determine the course of brain development, and how early life stress can change this trajectory.
- Can we harness microglia to promote healthy brain aging? Discover how immune cells in different brain regions show very distinct responses to aging.
The Pasadena Senior Center’s mission is to improve the lives of older adults through caring service with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism. With 10,000 Americans per day becoming older adults, the center is a leader in addressing issues of aging and provides innovative, cutting-edge, nationally recognized programs for this population group.
As a donor-supported nonprofit, the center operates without any local, state or federal funding and provides more services to older adults than any other organization in the San Gabriel Valley. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. To learn more visit www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org or call 626-795-4331.
