THE INTERSECTION OF ART AND SCIENCE: A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY WILL BE THEME FOR SPRING TERM OF THE MASTERS SERIES

UCLA Extension instructors Marc and Beverly Olevin will present a fascinating examination of how art and science intersect and relate in ‘The Intersection of Art and Science: A Journey of Discovery’ as part of the three-session Pasadena Senior Center’s Spring Master’s Series beginning Tuesday, May 5 and concluding on Tuesday, May 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on-site at the Pasadena Senior Center via Zoom.

Each of these entertaining sessions will explore the convergence when imagination fuels inquiry. Did you know that Salvador Dali’s ‘melting clocks’ work (‘The Persistence of Memory’) was inspired by Alfred Einstein’s theory of relativity? Or that the science fiction works of H.G. Wells, Verne and Asimov have become ‘science-fact?’ Join us as we celebrate mankind’s endless inquiry to reveal hidden truths of the universe.

For the complete series, tuition is only $40 for members and $50 for non-members. This Masters Series program is available only as a series, not as individual sessions. Recordings of sessions are available only to registered participants, and reservations are required. Register at pasadenaseniorcenter.org, then go to Lectures & Classes, then Masters Series, or call (626) 795-4332.

In the three sessions, presenters Mac and Beverly Olevin will explore:

·         May 5The Visual Arts: Painters and sculptors inspired by Albert Einstein which sparked imagination and creativity for generations.

·         May 12: The Performing Arts: Plays and music that explore scientific themes, remarkable individuals and the moral implications of discovery that permeated the 20th century.

·         May 19The Written Arts: Short stories, novels and poetry that examine how science fiction (and more) shapes our thinking and approach to scientific investigation and unlimited adventure.

Marc Olevin brings the ever-evolving history of science to life with a spotlight on the men and women whose stories illustrate the endless curiosity for discovery and impact our lives daily. He has taught courses in the history of science for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) since 2018 at UCLA, University of Washington, California State Universities, and the PSC’s Masters Series, including an ongoing course titled The Evolution of Science.

Beverly Olevin is a writer and theatrical director, and has taught at UCLA, University of Washington, Cal State University and the PSC’s Masters Series for over 20 years. She received UCLA Extension's Distinguished Instructor Award and was their first Artist-in-Residence. Her award-winning novel, The Good Side of Bad, was adapted into a film in 2024. Her newest short story collection is titled Putting Down Roots.
