FREE AUGUST EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER
Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout August. Residency in Pasadena is not required to attend.
Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required. Registration links can be found at www.PasadenaSeniorCenter.org. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online.
Guided Tours of Pasadena Senior Center – Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. During the tour, our knowledgeable guides will unveil the hidden gems of our center, showcasing the diverse range of programs and services we offer. From engaging classes and workshops to energizing fitness activities and community events, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Monthly Word Search Challenge & Giveaway – Monday, Aug. 3 to Friday, Aug. 28, onsite at Pasadena Senior Center, sponsored by Social Services. Start the month with a fun, brain-boosting activity! Managing Your Medication – Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m. via Zoom, Presented by Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. Taking your medications correctly is one of the most important steps you can take to stay healthy. Learn what medication adherence means, why it matters, and how following your prescribed treatment plan can improve your health, reduce the risk of medication errors, and help you get the best results from your medications. Monthly Food Bank Distribution — Friday, Aug. 7 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Preregistration for the program with proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients; the Food Bank is currently not accepting new enrollments. Seniors not currently enrolled in the program will be put on a waiting list and informed of other available food sources. Opening boxes on the premises is prohibited. Movie Matinees – Fridays, Aug. 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each PSC member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. Aug. 7 “Parenthood” (1989, PG-13) starring Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen. Four Buckman siblings attempt to raise their children - each in their own different style - and deal with the joys and sorrows that the process brings. Aug. 14: “Race (2016, PG-13) starring Stephan James and Jason Sudeikis. Jesse Owens' quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy. Aug. 21 “The Straight Story" (1999, G) starring Richard FFarnsworth and Sissy Spacek. Alvin Straight, a 73-year-old, learns that his estranged brother, Lyle is critically ill. Unable to drive, Alvin embarks on a journey from Iowa to Mt. Zion by riding a lawn mower. Aug. 28: “The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club" (2009, NR) starring Tom Skerritt and Kathy Bates. A documentary profile of Pasadena society girl turned adventurer and aviator, Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes. In the 1920's and 30's, Barnes was Hollywood's top woman stunt pilot. In the 1940's and 50's, she owned and operated the (in)famous ‘Happy Bottom Riding Club’ - a fly-in resort located near Edwards Air Force Base. Turning Pages, Finding Peace Book Club – Mondays beginning Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. in English, Thursdays beginning Aug. 13 at 9 a.m. in Spanish. Join us for a welcoming book club that explores stories centered on healing, resilience, and mental wellness through meaningful discussion. Each book selection will be read and discussed over 6–10 weeks, with the schedule determined by the group based on the length of the book. Our first book, which focused on trauma, has recently concluded. The next selection will continue the series with another book that explores mental health and well-being. Whether you're a returning participant or joining for the first time, we invite you to read, reflect, and connect in a supportive group setting. We’re celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary with a line up for American music from Broadway tunes to country, Roots music to Big Band. Each week features a different style of music – perfect for dancing and celebrating together.

Spot It, Stop It: Elder Abuse, Fraud and Scams – Thursday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. via Zoom, presented by Kimberly Moon, MPH, National Center on Elder Abuse. Older adults face mistreatment more often than we think, and most cases of elder abuse go undetected. This session will cover the types of abuse (including fraud and scams), how to spot the warning signs, and what you can do to protect yourself and your community. Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, Aug. 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Kathy Eastwood from Huntington Hospital will be doing blood pressure and glucose testing. The Hear Center will be doing free hearing screenings. Insurance representatives will be on hand to show different Medicare Health Plans, and answer questions that you may have. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last, courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. Recovery, Renewal and Resilience After Loss — 1st Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. via Zoom, 2nd Wednesday of the month at 12 p.m. via Zoom, presented in Partnership with Foundation for Senior Services. Join this uplifting and support group to reflect on the next phase of the journey after loss. Each week the Foundation for Senior Services specialists will guide seniors and families through real-life stories and meaningful activities that encourage healing, emotional resilience, and renewed connection. Through conversation, creativity, and self-discovery exercises, participants explore ways to move forward with greater strength and a deeper appreciation for the life that continues to unfold. Help with Handheld Devices – Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Join us in our state-of-the-art Technology Lab on Saturdays where we will provide one-on-one assistance for those who need assistance with cell phones, iPads, and laptops. Get help with everyday technology questions in a friendly, supportive environment. No need to make a reservation. Just stop by!
Lunch Program – Ongoing weekdays at 11:30 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. If you are 60 or older, enjoy a hot lunch every Monday through Friday on a first-come, first-served basis. Therapy and Case Management in Spanish and English – Ongoing. Are you interested in talking or connecting? Are you looking for resources? At the Pasadena Senior Center we provide therapy and case management in English and Spanish for those impacted by the Eaton and Palisades fire. We are also providing ongoing care to all others. Home Tea Program – Ongoing monthly. Anyone 50 and older can sign up to receive tea and an inspirational card once a month. To participate in this program, call (626) 685-6732.
Food Pantry – Ongoing weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Don’t let financial hardship, being homebound or other issues prevent you from eating healthy food. Pasadena Senior Center volunteers deliver food and other supplies to your door. To request delivery, call (626) 685-6732 and leave a message. Someone will return your call as soon as possible.
