FREE AUGUST EVENTS HOSTED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

Members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., are invited to free events and activities for anyone 50 and older throughout August.

Residency in Pasadena is not required. Some events are presented via Zoom, others are onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center and a few are hybrid via Zoom as well as onsite.

Registration for Zoom activities and most onsite events is required by visiting www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org and clicking on Activities & Events, Lectures & Classes or Resources. Everyone who registers for Zoom events will receive an email link for joining each activity online. Most Zoom events are recorded and televised on the Pasadena Senior Center YouTube channel. COVID protocols are observed for all onsite events at the center.

Masks and proof of vaccination are required for anyone who attends onsite events indoors or uses the fitness center.

Mind Fit – Thursday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Just like our bodies, our brains can show signs of aging over time. There are lifestyle changes you can make to keep your brain sharper for longer. Learn about the five areas of the brain that  must be kept fit to maintain and improve cognitive ability, which includes memory, awareness, reasoning, judgment and more. Presented by Becky Happach. Legal Consultations – Thursday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn about wills and trusts, conservatorships, durable powers of attorney and estate planning. To schedule a required appointment, call 626-795-4331.

Monthly Food Distribution Program — Friday, Aug. 5, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Pasadena Senior Center. Low-income adults 60 and older receive one free box of food and couples receive two. Each box includes foods that meet specific nutritional needs, such as cheese, canned fruits and vegetables, dry milk and related dairy products, cereals and other grain products, and more. Proof of income and California ID are required for first-time recipients. Boxes are heavy, so bring a pull-behind personal cart to the parking lot between the Pasadena Senior Center and the Metro Gold Line station. Movie Matinees – Fridays, Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. Aug. 5: "Downton Abbey: A New Era" (2022, PG) starring Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith. The Crawley family goes on a grand journey to the south of France to uncover the mystery of the dowager countess’s newly inherited villa. Aug. 12: “Hustle” (2022, R) starring Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah. An American basketball scout discovers a phenomenal street ball player while in Spain and sees the prospect as his opportunity to get back into the NBA. ­Aug. 19: “Florence Foster Jenkins” (2016, PG-13) starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. A New York socialite dreams of becoming a great opera singer, but her ambition far exceeds her talent. Aug. 26: “The Lost City” (2022, PG-13) starring Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock. A reclusive romance novelist on a book tour with her cover model gets swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure. Summer Concert Series – Mondays, Aug. 8, 15, 22, 29 and Sept. 5, onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Free summer concerts at Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., return Mondays at 5:30 p.m. on the spacious, tree-shaded patio. Aug. 8 – Michael Haggins Band (jazz, R&B); Aug 15JazzZone (smooth jazz, Latin tunes); Aug. 22 – Susie Hansen Latin Band (fiery jazz, salsa); Aug. 29 – Joyance (Celtic songs); Sept. 5 – Great American Swing Band (big band, Dixieland). Chair Yoga – Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. via Zoom. A Roadmap for Aging with Security – Thursday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. For older adults who live alone, isolation from family and friends can lead to depression and anxiety. Carol Marak, an educator and the author of “Solo and Smart,” will explain how to become a better self-advocate and create a more supportive and connected future. Music on the Patio: Bob and Don – Thursday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Join pianist Bob Lipson and singer Don Snyder for an afternoon of music on the spacious patio featuring everybody's favorite show tunes and standards. Sing along, kick up your heels and dance or simply tap your toes to the rhythm of the music. Guided Tour of Pasadena Senior Center – Thursday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. onsite at PSC. Take a guided tour with a Pasadena Senior Center ambassador and learn how PSC can enhance your life. Visit various areas of the center, peek in on activities and learn everything else about this first-ever accredited senior center in California. Tours are conducted the third Thursday of every month. Is Your Estate Plan up to Date? – Thursday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. How long has it been since you updated your estate plan? If it’s not kept up to date, it could be costly to your loved ones. Joe Engle, an attorney who specializes in leading people through the estate planning process with care, will explain how to avoid the state’s default plan, make your wishes known and take care of your loved ones. Health Fair and Fresh Produce Distribution – Friday, Aug. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Health fair services will include blood pressure and glucose testing, hearing tests, updates in Medicare health plans, resources and more. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. One bag per person. It's Time to Travel (Virtually) – Thursday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Virtual travel can help relieve stress and improve one’s overall mood and outlook on life. P.K. Maxx, a hypnotherapist with Body/Mind Imaging, will take participants on a relaxing experience through a virtual, guided meditation tour of China and on an African safari. Mediation and Dispute Resolution – Thursday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Learn how to resolve conflicts with the help of a trained mediator, including property ownership, landlord/tenant disputes, workplace/employment issues, family disagreements and more. Presented by Loyola Center for Conflict Resolution. MUSE/IQUE Offstage Education Workshop – Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Take a deeper look at MUSE/IQUE's 2022 season "L.A. Composed: A Festival of Los Angeles Music." Direct from their own L.A.-area stages, featured guest artists will join in conversation with Heather Lipson Bell, MUSE/IQUE's director of education, community engagement and digital media. In addition to online classes, onsite events and other activities, members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a monthly magazine, free food delivery for older adults in need, COVID updates specifically for older adults and more. 

The center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. During the pandemic, doors are open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for social services as well as the library, Sy Graff Fitness Center, computer lab and limited occupancy for events. Rooms are sanitized after each use.

In accordance with Pasadena Public Health Department guidelines, masks and proof of COVID vaccination are required for everyone who attends onsite activities indoors or uses the fitness center.
