FREE PRESENTATION ABOUT 1930S MOVIE STAR ANN DVORAK’S ENCINO RANCH SEPTEMBER 29 VIA ZOOM SPONSORED BY PASADENA SENIOR CENTER

Although Hollywood actress Ann Dvorak, known for her memorable roles in 1930s films such as “Scarface” and “Three on a Match,” rarely stayed in one place for long during her 68-year life, she called her 36-acre walnut ranch in Encino home from 1934 to 1945.

Author, historian and Los Angeles Public Library photo archivist Christina Rice will present a look back at Dvorak and the ranch, complete with plenty of photos, Thursday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. via Zoom, sponsored by the Pasadena Senior Center.

Members of the center and nonmembers 50 and older are welcome to register for the free event by visiting www.pasadenaseniorcenter.org and clicking on Lectures & Classes, then Informational Lectures or calling 626-795-4331. Everyone who registers will receive an email link to access the live Zoom presentation.

Dvorak’s scenic ranch served as a protective anchor during the most productive years of her life and career and serves as a reminder of the role of the San Fernando Valley in Hollywood history.

Although the walnut groves eventually were consumed by massive post-World War II development in the valley, the heart of the property remains, including the house, servant’s quarters, pool and pool house, cow stables and greenhouse, all built by Dvorak and her husband, actor/director Leslie Fenton.

Rice is the author of “Ann Dvorak: Hollywood’s Forgotten Rebel” (University Press of Kentucky, 2013).
