Healing Begins When We Honor What is Gone

Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May 6, 2025 until December 23, 2026
First Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m., in person
Second Wednesdays at Noon, via Zoom

Presented in partnership with Foundation for Senior Services

Loss isn’t just about what’s missing—it’s about what mattered. In a culture that rushes to “move on,” we often bypass the most essential parts of true healing and personal growth—to actively engage in the full range of our emotions and begin to honor the experience of grief and loss. This is not about fixing or forgetting—it’s about integrating memories in a way that brings peace, meaning, and wholeness to our lives. Join these discussion groups to share experiences and receive support from others in a compassionate, safe, and confidential space as we work through the healing journey. For more information contact the Welcome Desk at (626) 795-4331. To contact Foundation for Senior Services call (855) 836–0807 or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. What is FEMA

You can reach FEMA by calling 1 (800) 621-3362.

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, works by responding to major disasters declared by the President, providing financial assistance and support to individuals and communities affected by the disaster, including housing assistance, home repairs, and other essential needs, upon request from the state government or tribal leaders, only when a disaster is declared in a specific area; individuals must register with FEMA to be eligible for assistance and verify their damages through an inspection process. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Key points about how FEMA functions: [2, 5, 6]

  • Disaster Declaration: A state governor or tribal leader must request a disaster declaration from the federal government for FEMA to activate in a region. [2, 5, 6]
  • Registration: Individuals impacted by the disaster need to register with FEMA to apply for assistance, usually through a phone number or online portal. [1, 3, 7]
  • Eligibility Check: FEMA verifies the applicant's identity and assesses the damage to their property to determine eligibility for assistance. [1, 3, 8]
  • Assistance Types: FEMA may provide financial aid for temporary housing, home repairs, personal property replacement, and other disaster-related expenses depending on the situation. [1, 4, 9]
  • Inspection Process: FEMA may conduct an in-person inspection of the damaged property to assess the extent of the damage. [1, 3, 10]
  • Coordination with Local Agencies: FEMA works in collaboration with state and local emergency management agencies to coordinate response efforts. [2, 5, 11]

Important aspects of FEMA: [2, 12, 13]

  • Pre-Disaster Preparedness: FEMA also focuses on disaster preparedness activities like public education campaigns and community planning to mitigate future disaster impacts. [2, 12, 13]
  • Public Assistance: FEMA can provide funding to local governments and certain non-profit organizations to help them recover from a disaster by repairing public infrastructure. [2, 5, 14]
  • Insurance Interaction: FEMA assistance is typically provided for damages not covered by insurance, so applicants must submit information about their insurance claims. [1, 3, 6]

    • Renter issues, such as damage and repairs, rent and security deposits, and more
    • Applying for other emergency aid and benefits, such as unemployment insurance or student debt relief

Please go to www.lafla.org/fires for more resources, know-your-rights guides, and updates on upcoming clinics and workshops.
